Terwijl Paul Giamatti zich voorbereidt op de hoofdrol in Tjechov’s "Oom Vanja", krijgt hij een emotionele inzinking. Per toeval stuit hij in The New Yorker op een artikel over een hightechbedrijf dat zielen kan verwijderen, invriezen en bewaren; hij is ervan overtuigd dat dit de oplossing is voor het kwijtraken van de ‘ondraaglijke zwaarte van het bestaan'. Maar een zielloos leven leiden blijkt toch niet zo eenvoudig en daarom huurt hij de ziel van een Russische dichter, die hem in een surrealistische droomwereld brengt. De ruil krijgt echter een onverwachte wending als hij ontdekt dat een Russische misdaadorganisatie een handel in zielen heeft opgezet, met koeriers, obscure transacties en een bloeiende zwarte markt en hij erachter komt dat zijn eigen ziel verdwenen is.
